That's the part I don't get. This entire setup relies on us believing him, when all he's done is show that he isn't to be trusted. Unless you truly have no other options, why would you risk everything and believe he'll be true to his word in the first place?
Desperation is one of the few things that make sense, but even if you technically win, it isn't as though you're let go to return to whatever it was you were doing before.
I wonder why exactly that is... It just makes the whole thing sound even more unbelievable, and Hamelin must know that. Well, I suppose we'll see what happens now that someone's managed it.
He did say that he won't disclose who got away with it, if any of us manage. Which I admit I'm also unsure about, with regards to the reasoning. I suppose disclosing those who win his little game would make it open season on them among those of us who were left, but that would be to his benefit - he wouldn't have to prove whether he can grant wishes one way or another if those who earn them die.
It would make much more sense for him to tell us exactly who did it. It would paint a target on them by those who want to see justice done or whatnot. It just doesn't add up.
Perhaps there's more to all of this than we've been thinking, but it's a bit too early to tell for sure, I suppose.
...Given the notes that were found, it's safe to say that there's something else happening that we're not entirely privy to, though far be it from me to assume what.
