[Alexei wouldn't say he's surprised that someone is dead, but he's...disappointed? Disappointed seems accurate, though perhaps a bit too mild a word; he's certain that some of them are going to be upset at the loss of one of the younger ones, but from what he knew of the deceased she was both old enough and powerful enough to hold her own in combat normally. Perhaps someone got the better of her due to her decreased power here? It's difficult to say, and bluntly put he isn't particularly interested in dwelling on it, and as such he is here occupying himself exactly nowhere near the crime scene.

He probably should have expected Yeager to do the same; as it is...well.]

I see you're keeping yourself busy, to a certain extent.

Of course. I don't suppose you've found anything of interest.

I've no doubt that their misplaced sense of justice won't let them do otherwise. Although I do wonder if they're going to try to press the lot to allow the murderer to live.

It also depends on whom they believe did it. I find it more likely that they'll refuse to turn on a member of the group that's well-liked, particularly if their wish is one that's sympathetic.

I take it you haven't done this...?

[He's entirely willing to believe that Yeager just can't be fucked to investigate, but he has to admit some sort of morbid curiosity.]

[The answer is immediate.]

I have no interest in killing for what I've been offered. The fact that such a thing is being offered like this is more of an insult than anything.

Even if I were to change my mind, it's entirely too early - either to warrant going back on my word regarding that, or to attempt to kill while knowing nothing about the proceedings.

[This isn't even so much "Likes: Saving people" as it is "Probably dislikes: Killing people who don't deserve it", but eh, same difference.]

Please. If anything, that's one of the least insulting things you've said to me.

[ANYWAY, ]

If you're going to insist on not doing anything of value, ensure that no one comes across you. We don't know what they're going to consider suspicious and what they won't.

[...You know, if anything he's surprised that Yeager has chosen to address him rather than ignore him; it's easy enough to act as though they don't really know each other here, easier still when there's no one around. And yet here they are, and... Huh.]

Tonight seems to warrant it. I'm surprised you aren't in with the others.

I'm surprised that they have the nerve to behave as though they're mourning now that all of that is over. It seems their self-righteous anger only carried them so far.

It's why I stopped pressing Zola on it, once it became obvious that she was going to talk. She had a point in suggesting that it didn't matter, because in the scheme of things it didn't. All that was important was that it mattered to her.

[He isn't sure how to put what he's thinking into words right away; it takes him a moment.]

Her situation seemed...difficult; I imagine that it mattered very little to her who killed her, in the end. Whether it was us or those she knew back home, she was going to die either way. At least this way she would die for something she did, rather than for something she failed to do.

More righteous anger and screaming, I imagine. Though I'm fairly sure that the others would have voted for Zola either way, simply because they didn't want it to be Yor.
