It wasn't terrible by any means, just highly impersonal. You become accustomed to the idea that you won't have privacy, and likewise accustomed to the idea that nothing you own is going to be considered "yours" until the day you leave. Even then, it's difficult to acclimate to actually having anything of your own beyond that.
I didn't have many difficulties there - by that time I was well-acquainted with the idea of keeping my head down and not voicing thoughts on things unless it was necessary or something I couldn't abide not speaking up about.
...I didn't require much back then. As long as there was a reasonable amount of space and somewhere decent to sleep I had nothing to complain about.
